Episode Summary:

In this episode of Coaching Revealed, Dr. Pamela Larde, Director of Education of the Institute of Coaching, Professor, Author, and Researcher explores her work on joy with IOC Podcast Hosts, Austin Matzelle and Emily Terrani. The episode covers how joy impacts our daily lives, and how individuals can cultivate healthy habits for sustaining their joy. Dr. Larde shares models including her ‘Multidimensional Framework of Joy’ model to help one identify and increase their joy baseline.

Dr. Larde’s work in joy started in academia when she found that both coaching tools and an understanding of joy were crucial in helping her respond to the various needs students were bringing to her. Working with populations including students, trauma survivors, and veterans, Dr. Larde began exploring how joy helps build resilience.

In utilizing joy as a tool, Dr. Larde distinguishes the differences between joy and happiness. Happiness is a response to one’s environment, whereas joy is a reflection of one’s internal state. Both of these impact an individual’s well-being. Understanding the basis of joy and its connection to one’s well-being helps lay the foundation for the various models Dr. Larde uses.

One of Dr. Larde’s models is the Multidimensional Framework of Joy, which contains the components of well-being, internalization, connection, and liberation. With well-being centered, individuals are able to internalize their perspective on life and explore their connection with others. Through these components, communities of joy can help liberate individuals and communities.

Utilizing the Multidimensional Framework of Joy, this episode explores how individuals can assess their well-being, along with sustaining their joy throughout challenges such as fragmented communities and potentially toxic environments.
